Today I Wait Timelines Keeping true to the Friction Goods standard of thoughtfully poetic, off-the-beaten-path artists, Today I Waitıs third release on the label is often a bombardment of emotional lyrics convicted by vocals that are pure, pulverizing hardcore quality. However, when Today I Wait slaughter in their very hardcore moments, itıs not the intriguing mesh of lyrically obscure poetry set to blood-curdling screaming that powers these Timelines forward (though they certainly donıt hurt.) Instead, itıs the groupıs entrenched addiction to neck-straining metal rhythms that will make repeat listens appealing. The powerful guitar chords and slamming metal breakdowns show off a heavy musical proficiency that rocks the body violently at their best ("Back to Blue," "Watch the Road," the wrenching title track and their best-crafted hardcore example on "Troubleshooting.") So, itıs indisputably hardcore and five of the seven tracks within are relentlessly intense, giving nary a momentıs reprieve from the assault. Yet, the very best of Today I Waitıs work comes in its atypical moments, demonstrating not only their adeptness beyond heaviness but a well-honed thoughtfulness for the experimental, as well. The groupıs rendition of Misfits "Bullet" is galvanizing, doing much justice to the old-school punk classic in a much looser format than this band typically performs within. Rather than attacking the cover in their regularly suffocating hardcore intensity, Today grab the horns of no-bullshit, vintage punk rock and unleash this discıs most pleasing offering. It doesnıt hurt that "Bullet" gets introduced, interestingly enough, by a broadcast of the assassination of JFK, showing off their creative thinking, a gift exemplified on the instrumental "Bells and Whistles," a quiet, excellently crafted session powered mentally as much by the nearly indecipherable background samples as by the moody but relaxed melodies, later muscled by yet another powerful metal attack, put together by the group. Certainly, Today I Waitıs new richness and impressive forays into diversity make these Lines stunning to spend Time within TODAY I WAIT S/T reviews TODAYIWAIT S/T Friction Records 4/02 http://www.slowtrackstar.net Grand Rapids Michigan must be a hot spot for the dentistry profession, Thereıs probably one in every strip mall and corner building. Having such a prominent hardcore scene has got to loosen fillings and crowns for that matter, this disc most certainly loosened mine. Helicopter machine gun double-bass pedal beats; ³metal as fuck² guitars and blood curdling yelps are TodayIwait. A level plane of of grind spackled against consistently spazzing guitar intricacy and the occasional vocal breakdown, make this release a real treat for anyone looking to rid themselves of a toothache or church missionaries approaching your driveway with pamphlets. (JP) todayiwait CD (Friction Records) One of the most metal hardcore bands you will ever hear. Brutality and aggression transformed into an intricate pattern of drumbeats, screams, and notes designed to hit you where you think. Lightning quick time changes, skull crushing playing, and an all out dedication to the power of hardcore music to grab you, shake you like a limp defenseless ragdoll and throw you down a changed man. Inventive, creative songwriting rules the day here, with vocals from soft to throat ripping, intelligent, thought provoking lyrics, and all kinds of unique and unusual power chords and down tunings. I am inexcusably late in writing this review, and I apologize to Friction Records, especially since this CD slays. todayiwait is the most incredibly talented talented hardcore band I've heard in years. Swirling layers of time shifting waygone heaviness consume the listener in a maelstrom of hardcore intensity. Complex music to be experienced and felt instead of merely heard. Not for the weak. This is hardcore at its most potent and powerful. - Glenn Tillman. www.tangerinemagazine.com Playlist for Wednesday Night Hardcore - WWSP 89.9FM - Stevens Point, WI the top 5 weekly albums are selected based on the amount of play they've recieved over the last 3 week period and by requests. top 5 for 10/16/02 1. Underoath - The Changing of Times TODAY I WAIT s/t Friction Records This isn't one of those poseur metal bands that play heavy riffs just to digress to emo simpering. Like a mad cross between Pg.99 and Emperor, there are few breaks from the heat of grinding guitars with sweeping mini solos and thrashing thunks. The lyrics are rather indecipherable with short barked bursts of syllables. The recording quality is really fantastic, which is more than I can say for the cd art layout. There are some nice messy tape recorder noise sampled in at times, but not for long enough to distract from the rock. Oh and metal-core love comes out in lyrics like "My heart breaks every time you scream." -www.sincerebrutality.com TODAY I WAIT s/t Friction Records It seems that now more than ever, the Detroit metal scene is showing concrete evidence that it has formed a distinct regional sound. One such act to emphasize this progression is a group by the name of Today I Wait. After appearing on a handful of compilations, their self-titled debut has finally arrived to showcase their knack for technical songwriting, rhythmic harmony and bestial undercurrents. Today I Wait are a difficult band to compare to other well-known acts; it's just impossible. They've forged a sound that can only be declared their own brooding distorted layers, subjacent emo twinges, primal-scream therepy vocal forms accompanied by trancelike jazz/death-metal-based percussion. Today I Wait's debut can only be summed up by one word: Superb. www.todayiwait.com. Reason to buy: The musical equivalent to a curb job. Best Listening Experience: "Crossbones and Traffic Jams." - Real Detroit Weekly: August 21-27, 2002(br) TODAY I WAIT (Friction) 5 out of 6 pitch forks. Thereıs something to be said about records that are made for those recording them and not for those who might be listening. Fortunately TODAY I WAIT has been set loose on the masses. This is sheer hard-rock violence via stoned-out and ethereal guitar strums that are fiercely delivered. The vocals are guttural yet tuneful and the whole thing is bolstered by a strong punk-rock rhythm section. Recommended. -D.I.W. (Devil in the woods) #4.2 TODAY I WAIT DETROIT, MICH. Finding equal strength in both slow, grinding grooves and double-time, double-bass syncopations, Detroit's Today I Wait displays superior musicianship and disciplined songwriting while simultaneously channeling furious aggression into the band's Friction Records debut. These nine highly tuned, highly brutal refined metal offerings consistently display technical wizardry and even manage to insert dynamite (though short-lived) vocal hooks among a constantly shifting storm of instrumental sections and spirited screaming, such as in "Troubleshooting" and "Box Set." www.todayiwait.com www.frictiongoods.com -Recoil Magazine TODAY I WAIT " S/T " Today i Wait...!! que el mundo sea un lugar mejor donde poder vivir!! Today i Wait...!! que el hambre se acabe en el mundo....!!! Today i Wait que todo los paises vivan en alegria y felicidad y no haya mas guerras y mas extrerminios ni nada de ello...!! Today I Wait....Today I Wait...!!... -www.bloodcifery.com (Spain) Translation by Tami VandenBerg I am guessing that the reveiwer looked up the word "wait" in the dictionary and found "esperar" which can mean wait/hope for something... at least then the first few lines would make a bit more sense. Today I wait!!! that the world would be a better place to live. Today I wait!! that hunger would end in the world Today I wait that all the countries live in happiness and contentment and there won't be any more wars or disasters or anything... Today I wait, today i wait...After this introduction with all the great hopes for all the world, and with a name like this, how could such an introduction not be pointed out to me, you know? I ask myself what royal significance would this name today i wait have? It just seems like over the last few years this style of band from metal to hardcore, has named themselves with little phrases that perhaps signify desires or perhaps frustrations or they could simply be words that the wind brings in. Another good name. I love this label! Or at least the little of it that I have heard... bands like Don Knotts, Gavin Black, and this Today I wait, a sextet (now I believe they are a quintet) from the city of automobile excellence, Detroit. They bring their version more metal than of hardcore, with part emotion, part shrieking voices, very much the purest style of screaming, very good instrumental technique full of intensity. With continuous changes happening that are melodic and melancoly to rhythms heavy and brutal. Basically this is what this young band offers...To begin with, they have two bassists? (bajistas) /vocalists who create a rhythm section which together is like a battery full of double bass drums... shamelessley hyper voices screaming plainly, who rend their vocal chords to unsuspected limits, it is sickeningly sweet... and sad and a perfect contrast grows... and the final point are the squeaking quitars who occassionally create melodies and at other times pound heavy rifts in a very unhealthy way...distorted and with the pleasant instrumental quality of intensity and continuity. If you enjoy the material with the most screaming of the metalcore, this band will for sure drive you mad with enjoyment... |
