The Nain Rouge borrow their name from Detroit's 200 year old urban legend of the Red Dwarf. It seems that sightings of the dark red, furry imp preceded terrific disasters like massive fires, bloody battles, fatal car crashes, and ice/snow storms. Though it may seem as though their name is simply a reference to the band's stomping grounds, its appropriateness delves a little deeper. It seems that the band has turned over vocal duties to the Red Dwarf himself. The Nain Rouge's sound is unrelenting, with their groovy, ballistic metal riffing and freight train rhythms. The siren drilling of high-end guitar work and closed-fisted chugging are reminiscent of something on Relapse Records.

The Nain Rouge We can all agree that there are some odd "creatures" roaming the darkened streets of Detroit, but the next time you're downtown keep your eyes peeled for the "Nain Rouge," Metro Detroit's very own "Red Dwarf." Tales of the Red Dwarf date back as far as 200 years ago, and are usually precursory to a tragic event. Witnesses of this goblin-like creature describe it as no more than two and half feet tall, covered in dark red to black skin or fur with blazing red eyes. Cadillac, the founder of Detroit, (1701) is rumored to have encountered and even attacked the Red Dwarf. Within days Cadillac, lost both his fame and fortune. On July 30th 1763 the day before the battle of Bloody Run, the creature was seen dancing along the banks of the Detroit River. Multiple sightings of the Imp occurred in 1805 just before the majority of Detroit was consumed in a massive fire. Two other reported encounters include a 1813 sighting by Michigan war hero General William Hall and a "dwarf attack" 70 years later in 1884. The woman involved in the 1884 attack described the creature as resembling, "a baboon with a horned head...brilliant restless eyes and a devilish leer on its face." In 1964 in Niles, Michigan the Nain Rouge attacked a man in his car and shattered the windshield, the victim kicked at the creature and fainted. Also several citizens of Metro Detroit spotted the Red Dwarf the day before the 1967 riots. On March 1st 1976 two employees of Detroit Edison saw a small "child" climbing a utility pole. Fearing the "child" might fall the two men called out to "him" and much to their surprise the "child" leaped from the top of the twenty-foot pole and scurried away. The Red Dwarf had reared it's face again and the next day Detroit was buried in one of the worst ice/snowstorms in it's history. Even though reports of the "Nain Rouge" are few and poorly documented there's still a chance that the Red Dwarf is seen very often but never officially reported. So remember to keep an eye out the next time you're walking to your car after dinner or a show, you just might catch a glimpse of Detroit's Red Dwarf!
