GAVIN BLACK "Seventh Generation Rock and Roll"
Dude, I looked at the cover, and totally
thought I was about to listen to the Midwest's
newest emo sensation, and here I am
getting pummeled by a modern day CAVITY.
Fuck, this
thing crushes! I wish more heavy bands
would take note and learn how to write good songs
instead of relying on a good sound to make us
ignore their boring riffing. Vocals remind me
occasionally of Phil Anselmo, but hey,
I can live with that. Fans of burly ass downtuned rock,
take note and hunt this disc down.
Shit's good, man. (WN)

Gavin Black
Seventh Generation Rock and Roll
As Grand Rapids' premiere hardcore act, Gavin Black attempts to impress no one - and in doing so, impresses damn near everyone. Still a very young band, Black's made a name for itself by throwing out the heaviest sets of music possible while still maintaining more melody than most hardcore bands can conceive. Seventh Generation Rock And Roll sounds immaculate, and the band's cover of Faith No More's "Jizzlobber" is more than enough to put this July release on your Immediate Buy list. Area label Friction Records has got a winner in Black, provided the band can get in enough clubgoer faces to generate the word-of-mouth support needed to incite financial stability's liberating rewards.
-Recoil
This Michigan band remind me of early Coalesce,
especially vocally.
Heavy mesmerizing grooves, chaotic song structures,
dizzying instrumentation,
and pummeling breakdowns.

Can someone tell me what the hell this next guy is talking about?
This is exactly as it was printed.
It looks like the Music Revue could use a new editor.
I highlighted some of my favorite lines.
Let us add to the list of why this country is great.
The fact that people of the media can put under a microscope
their very different talents of such acts Darren Hayes
(see national music reviews), and Gavin Black in the same publication.
Diversity is sent out into our world daily, and it is up to each consumer
to pick and choose his or her very own forms of expression, which is always
thrown our way in nice plastic packaging. The music as a form has the
ability to forever be linked to how good it may feel to get home from
work and unleash pillows at your bedroom wall. The lyrics are a tad
unexplainable, but the spirit is relentless. The fact that someone
gives to himself or herself to such a degree is something that can
be highly sympathized with from anyone who has felt the need to vent.
One would have to guess that music like hardcore is experience on
stereo in mere antisipation of of how much the energy will be
enhanced live. Once again, as you may see, this music is hard
to put in a box - and I am sure the suits just fine the culture
that identifies. Rock!

GAVIN BLACK " SEVENTH GENERATION OF ROCK AND ROLL " FRICTION RECORDS
